Par un après-midi de février à Tours, un inconnu sur un quai de gare remet une enveloppe à Vivienne Marchetti.

L'enveloppe provient d'un homme mort depuis dix-neuf ans. Elle ne l'ouvrira pas avant dix mois.

Au moment où elle l'ouvre dans une cuisine située au-dessus d'une librairie, un dimanche matin de mai, en compagnie d'une femme qu'elle apprend peu à peu à considérer comme une amie, Vivienne Marchetti n'est plus la même personne que celle qui l'avait reçue. Une opération du cerveau s'en est chargée. Elle est revenue de la table d'opération presque intacte, mais avec quelque chose de desserré dans l'architecture de sa mémoire. Quelque chose qui était peut-être déjà là, depuis toujours, en embuscade.

L'enveloppe la mène jusqu'à un presbytère en Provence, à une boîte en bois scellée depuis vingt ans, et à une petite timbale de baptême en argent gravée d'un prénom qui n'est pas le sien. Elle la conduit, plus loin encore, à cette découverte: la berceuse qu'elle fredonne depuis son réveil de l'opération ne lui appartient pas du moins, pas à sa vie consciente. Elle appartient à une femme qui, en 1935, arriva dans un village du Banat portant un enfant, et en repartit sans l'un ni l'autre.

Elle mène, enfin, à une question sur la mémoire à laquelle aucun neurochirurgien de la clinique de Lausanne ne saurait répondre tout à fait: que porte le corps, que l'esprit a reçu l'ordre d'oublier ?

*Ce que le corps se souvient* est un roman sur l'héritage, celui qui voyage à travers les berceuses, les timbales en argent et les visages qui réapparaissent, toutes les cinq ou six générations, au sein de familles qui ignorent de les porter en elles. C'est le roman d'une femme qui rentre chez elle, dans une maison qui l'attend depuis plus longtemps qu'elle n'est en vie. Et c'est, tout en douceur, un roman sur ce que laisse derrière lui un mariage, lorsque les deux époux apprennent enfin à faire preuve de bienveillance l'un envers l'autre.
