About the Book

In Dickensian Britain, a popular parlour game demanded that players sacrifice something of value each time they erred - no matter how small the mistake.

September, 1843. Teenagers Ben and Jem, bound by desperation and circumstance, flee the oppressive confines of a London school for wayward boys. As they journey across the countryside, their bond deepens, each finding solace in the other while carefully guarding the secrets that haunt them.

Seeking shelter from violent storms, they take refuge in an abandoned farmstead. There, at last, Ben and Jem allow themselves to acknowledge their true feelings - but the farmstead is no sanctuary. It is shrouded in darkness, and something within that darkness has taken notice of them... and recognizes one of its own.

Equal parts Dickensian Drama, Queer Coming of Age tale, and Gothic Horror, it is a haunting story of discovery, love, and the price exacted when past mistakes - and the darkness between worlds - demand their rightful sacrifice.

About the Author :
J.S. was born and raised in Ashtabula, Ohio, a small port town on the southern shore of Lake Erie. A Sunday's child, an unrepentant Virgo, and an unwilling Catholic, J.S. gravitated towards science fiction and fantasy at an early age. The original Star Trek series made an indelible impression upon him, and he is a die-hard fan to this day. A self-proclaimed purveyor of pop music, J.S. spent the late '60s and most of the '70s listening to Detroit/Windsor's Top 30 powerhouse AM 800 CKLW. He still retains his collection of childhood 45s, his college vinyl, and over 1,000 CDs that he just can't part with. He's maintained an online radio station since 2004. J.S. came out as queer in his early twenties, though he'd been pairing M/M couples from mainstream media long before that. J.S. has penned a fair bit of M/M fan fiction across a number of fandoms, and this piece is his first original work. J.S. enjoys a good red ale, a nice bourbon, and any appetiser with a fancy aioli. He is fiercely progressive, definitely liberal, and proudly "woke." J.S. resides in North Fort Myers, Florida, with his husband of 28 years, and their lovably overbearing Black Mouth Cur, Jo.
