About the Author :
Roger D. Evans's profound connection to World War II is a legacy of service. His father fought with the U.S. Army's Fourth Infantry Division in the grueling Hürtgen Forest campaign, and two of his brothers served in the U.S. Army, with one wounded in Vietnam. This family tradition inspired Roger to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, an experience that solidified his discipline, perseverance, and pride. A retired NTSB investigator, Evans has dedicated years to meticulously researching the World War II era and the Holocaust. His passion has taken him to historical sites across Europe, and his writing is the culmination of this intensive study. Though not Jewish, Evans approaches his work on the Holocaust with deep reverence and empathy, exploring themes of moral courage, survival, and the complexities of human nature. His time at Camp Smith in Hawaii, processing replacement orders for Marines in Vietnam, provided a stark understanding of the human cost of war. This perspective, coupled with his military background, informs his commitment to remember, honor, and bear witness through his storytelling. Born in Michigan as the sixth of nine children and now residing in Arizona with his wife, Cindy, Roger's life has been shaped by the values of duty, resilience, and a profound reflection on history and the human spirit.
Review :
Review 1 -- This is one of those books that keeps you reading beyond your bedtime, one that you miss as soon as you put it down, and one that gets your imagination of each scene very vivid. Reminds you that you can be living an everyday peaceful life, and things out of your control can drastically change it, both by natural events and man-made events. I am glad the book ended the way it did, with some justice done and some happiness re-attained.
Review 2 -- I love a good fact-based historical fiction book. The wide range of emotions overtook me, which gave me. I think I was holding my breath through the whole thing. Tears of sadness, tears of relief, and joy. I hope to read more from this author; his writing really captivates you.
Review 3 -- Once you get involved with this story and its characters, you will not want to put it down. Because of this novel, I learned so much about the Holocaust and the atrocities of what racism does to a society. It gave me a personal birds-eye view of what an ordinary family experienced during this horrific time, as well as
the perspective of the other side. This book is a must-read, and I highly recommend it.
Review 4 -- Heartfelt story, told well! Love this genre- this book did not disappoint. Well-researched, and it hits your core. Must-read.
Review 5 -- I must admit, this was the first historical fiction novel I ever read. I am so thankful for my friend's recommendation. The story tells a heartbreaking story of a family's struggle during the Holocaust. The trauma, pain, and unconceivable living situations tore at my heart. A harrowing tale to read, but so essential to be told. A reminder to NEVER repeat history's mistakes. The author meticulously portrays each character and their trials & tribulations. Much sadness followed by unbelievable strength and miracles. A MUST read.
Review 6 -- Great writing technique by the author. I had so many emotions while reading this book. There is no place for hatred in our society. I highly recommend this book, so the past will never be forgotten, and this part of history will never be repeated.
Review 7 -- The Will to Remember follows the Kelner family, a Jewish family living in a small Polish village, whose lives are forever changed by the Nazi invasion and the horrors of the Holocaust. One of the book's great strengths is how it balances detailed historical research with emotional truths. The suffering, fear, and even moments of hope or strength in the Kelner family are made to feel real and profoundly affecting. The author's care in showing their humanity, not reducing them to victims or symbols, that's what gives the narrative real power. This novel has unflinching honesty; it is not a clean or romanticized Holocaust story. That honesty makes the story heavier, but also more authentic. This novel invites the reader to stand alongside the victims, to remember, and to feel their weight and the weight of history. In doing so, it honors the memory of countless lives lost and insists: we must not forget.
