About the Book

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington is recognized as one of the great composers and orchestra leaders of the twentieth century. To understand Ellington's genius, jazz scholars, collectors, and fans must rely on the phonograph record, the most accurate testimony of the strength of his work. Duke Ellington: A Listener's Guide provides jazz scholars, specialists, and novice and experienced listeners with a detailed, critical commentary on this jazz master's recordings from 1924 to 1974. The guide begins with a brief overview of the artist and explores the complexity and unending creativity of his music. The chapters follow in a chronological sequence covering identifiable stages in output and list essential Ellingtonia. Collectors will especially appreciate the guide to the French RCA Works of Duke Ellington Volumes 14-17. The appendixes include a bibliography, a comprehensive discography listing both LPs and CDs, and a list of Ellington musicians with the dates of their membership in the band.

About the Author :
This book was the last work of Eddie Lambert one of the world's foremost Ellington experts, who died in 1987. Planned as his definitive contribution to Ellington studies, it now stands as a tribute to a fine scholar. Over a 30-year writing career, Eddie had written numerous articles for periodicals such as Jazz Monthly, Jazz and Blues, Coda, and Jazz Journal.

Review :
...stands as a tribute to both Eddie Lambert and Duke Ellington...the volume is peppered with many illustrations, some furnished by the Institute of Jazz Studies. This massive work is an indispensable treasure for the Ellington fanatic. Lambert seamlessly mixes extended (but never off-puttingly technical) analyses of Ellington's recorded works with biographical and historical details, so that the book also functions as a critical history of Ellington's career...This book is the stuff that dreams are made of. ...well-written and carefully researched...a 'must-have' to supplement your record collection! ...packed with information, and the quality of Mr. Lambert's prose is consistently high...a book that no serious Ellington fan should be without...the perfect companion to the extensive Ellington discographies that have already been published...describes the music itself in more detail than has ever been presented in published form...this is the first major printed work about Ellington issued in his centennial year...will prove a valuable and trusted listening companion. ...this is an impressive and valuable reference for any serious collection of jazz or US music literature. ...well-written guide. This reference will make a valuable addition to the holdings of contemporary music libraries. Written lovingly, with critical analysis and in a clear, readable, though scholarly prose...the text offers a treasure trove of information for anyone the least interested in the music of Duke Ellington. ...the most illuminating chronicle of the recordings made by the Duke Ellington band but it is much more than that. Lambert's uncanny understanding of the music, whatever the era, coupled with his eloquent description of each piece can only enhance a listener's enjoyment of the music. This book is an essential adjunct to the music.
