About the Book

If China's space ambitions continue unchallenged, America will be seriously economically and militarily disadvantaged. This book provides a comprehensive strategy to secure U.S. primacy in the space domain. From Moon landings to plans for asteroid mining, China is beginning to exploit space to achieve its great power ambitions. Its strategy could, over time, severely and adversely impact U.S. economic and military security. The United States needs to structure its approach to space to ensure that it can meet or surpass PRC timelines. Authors Richard M. Harrison and Peter A. Garretson, both from the American Foreign Policy Council, review the literature on Chinese space ambitions and assess U.S. space-related initiatives across the government, military, and private sector to understand the maturity of technology available to support space initiatives. Their first-hand research and findings are supplemented by interviews with industry experts, corporate space leaders, and government and military officials. The Next Space Race describes and seeks to influence the development of American space policy to ensure the U.S. industrial base is ready to meet or surpass PRC milestones, empower and clarify the mission of the newly minted Space Force, provide guidance to NASA and other federal agencies, and incentivize private sector companies to contribute to ensuring American space primacy.

Review :
The Next Space Race lays out in a holistic and systemic way what is at stake in the contest for leadership in space between the United States and China, and what America's agencies need to be enabled and directed to do. In these pages, we find a menu of concrete steps for the Executive Branch and Congress to take to secure our leadership on the ultimate high ground. There could not be a more critical time in human history to take action on securing the resources, wealth, and overall domain of space. Harrison and Garretson provide a thorough, well-researched, and detailed analysis of the who, why, and what of space, as well as providing actionable recommendations for the United States to maintain superiority and realize significant economic benefit. This fascinating book is accessible and easy to read, making it the perfect resource for anyone from the novice to the well-informed. American leadership in outer space will be essential for American leadership in the 21st century. The Next Space Race is a sweeping review and analysis of the opportunities and challenges the United States faces in the space domain. It is a solid primer for policymakers, legislators, entrepreneurs, investors, and the public on how to ensure the United States can seize the opportunity that is outer space-providing for our continued security and opening vast new economic frontiers. The Next Space Race highlights a grossly understated problem: a picture of where we stand relative to China and its impressive space ambitions. That makes it indispensable reading in this era of Great Power Competition. Finally, legislators and policymakers have a road map for empowering our space entrepreneurs, providing for their security, and opening vast new economic opportunities for us and our allies and partners. This is a must-read for industry leaders, start-ups, and groups looking for a way to explain the value of space to their representatives. The Next Space Race focuses on the growing complexity between security and economics in space and identifies key initiatives needed to ensure American leadership in space. It highlights different aspects of cooperation and competition, whether across the entire US government, in public-private partnerships, with our allies, and how to prevail in our growing competition with China. One unique aspect of this book is focusing on how to further unleash the private sector as a key element of U.S. strategy.
