Au soir du 2 mai 2026, Fally Ipupa pénètre sur la pelouse du Stade de France. Il devient alors le premier artiste congolais de l'histoire à se produire en tête d'affiche dans le plus grand stade d'Europe - en lingala, sous son propre nom, selon ses propres termes. Deux soirs. Cent soixante mille personnes. Le petit garçon de Bandalungwa, dont la mère priait pour guérir le bégaiement, venait de s'imposer comme le musicien africain le plus influent de sa génération à l'échelle internationale.

Voici le récit de cette ascension fulgurante.

Du Zaïre vacillant des années 1980, où un enfant tapait les rythmes de Wenge Musica sur son banc d'école, aux sept années d'un apprentissage acharné au sein du Quartier Latin International de Koffi Olomide - l'orchestre le plus puissant que l'Afrique ait jamais connu. De la rupture spectaculaire de 2006 qui annonça sa carrière solo, à la nuit de Bercy en février 2020, où les flammes des heurts extérieurs ne purent l'empêcher de chanter La vie est belle. Du grand Clásico contre Ferre Gola, qui divisa un continent entre Warriors et Gaulois, jusqu'aux orphelinats, ambulances et campagnes de l'UNICEF financés par sa propre fondation. De son mariage avec Naomie - la gérante de boutique à Gombe qui, la première, pressentit son destin - jusqu'à cette nuit où il dansa avec elle, durant quatre-vingt-dix secondes, devant la plus grande foule de sa vie.

Plus qu'une biographie, c'est l'épopée centenaire d'une tradition.

C'est l'histoire de la rumba congolaise elle-même. Née dans les bars du Léopoldville des années 1930, portée par Wendo, Le Grand Kallé, Franco Luambo, Tabu Ley, Papa Wemba, Werrason et Koffi Olomide, elle trouve ici sa voix du XXIe siècle: celle d'un homme qui a refusé de diluer son identité pour être entendu du monde entier.

Cornelis van Houte côtoie la diaspora congolaise de Belgique, de France et des Pays-Bas depuis trois décennies. Il a suivi l'artiste des petites salles communautaires de Liège en 2002 jusqu'aux plus grandes arènes européennes des années 2020. Il écrit sur cette musique avec l'intimité profonde d'un auditeur qui l'habite depuis un quart de siècle - le sebene, la mélopée, la libanga, la SAPE, le ténor salésien - et avec la rigueur analytique d'un auteur conscient de l'importance de ce témoignage.
