About the Book

On the eighteenth of February, 1999, in a ballroom in Beverly Hills, the American Film Institute gathered eight hundred people to honor Dustin Hoffman. They took the lights down and ran a reel of every man he had ever played. Somewhere in the third minute, his chest closed.

He had his first panic attack that night. He was sixty-one years old, he had two Academy Awards, and within weeks he told his wife he did not want to act anymore. He explained it later in a single clause: it had to do with a central core in me, which was that I never felt I deserved success.

DUSTING HOFFMAN traces that core back to a kitchen in Los Angeles, where a woman who loved him told a nine-year-old boy that he was not good-looking enough to be an actor - and he believed her, and never stopped.

What follows is the documented life. The five closed doors at the Actors Studio. The kitchen floor he slept on between a refrigerator and a bathtub. The Broadway break he lost to a cooking accident, and the fact that he went back and stage-managed the same production from the wings. The producer who mistook him for the window cleaner. The unemployment checks he cashed after The Graduate made him famous. The makeup chair where he asked to be made beautiful and was told: that's as good as it gets.

Running underneath it is a second voice - the Watcher, a presence at the back of every room, keeping the cold column, holding a contract with the name spelled wrong.

Every fact is sourced. Every interior is invention. And the question the book is built on is whether a man can spend eighty-eight years being told he is exceptional and never once file the finding.
