"Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). Those words were not written in comfort. They were written in the ashes of Jerusalem, by someone who had spent a lifetime warning that the ashes were coming and watched almost no one listen.

Judgment and Mercy: Reflections on the Books of Jeremiah and Lamentations is the fourteenth volume in The Daily Quiet Time Reflections Series, continuing the same daily, one-reading-at-a-time approach used throughout - most recently in Judgment and Glory: Reflections on the Book of Isaiah. Drawn from more than a decade of daily Quiet Time writing and Sunday School teaching at First Baptist Church in Dallas, Eugene Han and Eunmi Kim walk through the whole of Jeremiah's forty-year ministry and the five poems of Lamentations across eighteen chapters, organized into two Parts - Jeremiah's long, largely unheeded call to repentance and eventual surrender, and Lamentations' honest, structured grief over the judgment that call was meant to prevent.

This is not a technical commentary written for seminarians. It is a layman's companion for ordinary believers who want to read these two difficult, often-skipped books slowly and honestly - tracing how a prophet who was hated, imprisoned, and nearly killed for his message became, in the end, one of the clearest voices in the Old Testament for both the seriousness of God's judgment and the certainty of His mercy toward anyone who turns back to Him.

Each chapter includes:

  • A close, readable walk through that day's chapters, grounded in careful study but written for everyday readers
  • Cross-references tracing how Jeremiah's New Covenant promise (31:31-34) is quoted and fulfilled in the New Testament, from the Last Supper to the book of Hebrews
