About the Book

Five months into a marriage neither of them chose, Eliza Fairbourne Thornebridge has learned to read Thornebridge Manor the way other women read parlors: in silences, shifted objects, and the particular quality of footsteps after midnight. She and Arthur have reached an uneasy accord-careful, functional, and lit from beneath by something neither has named.

Then a carriage arrives at dusk. No house crest on the door. The coachman doesn't look at the footman.

The visitor's name is Caspar Vane. He is charming, impeccably dressed, and immediately, inexplicably wrong in a way Eliza cannot yet articulate. He claims an old acquaintance with Arthur's family. Arthur receives him with glacial courtesy and something that looks, to Eliza's careful eye, like controlled fear.

Caspar Vane has come for reasons he will not name. He knows about the laboratory hidden beneath the manor. He knows about the flaw in the mechanism that Arthur has been trying to correct for twelve years. And his presence makes it impossible for Eliza and Arthur to continue managing their arrangement as two separate people-for the first time, they must present themselves as a unified household.

What Eliza doesn't yet know is what Caspar Vane actually is. What he wants. And why his arrival feels less like a threat and more like a warning.

The Visitor at the Gate is the second book in the Thornebridge Chronicles-a slow-burn Victorian romance series set in a manor on the Cornish coast, where the line between scientific ambition and something older and stranger grows thinner with each book.
