About the Book

He was four months old when his father died. Four years old when his mother died. The city of Cairo took him in, and the tradition took him in after that, and he spent the next seventy-five years giving everything he had back to it.

Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Hajar al-Asqalani - known to the Islamic scholarly world simply as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the Guardian - is one of the most important figures in the fourteen-century history of hadith scholarship. His commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, the Fath al-Bari, took twenty-five years to write and has been the standard reference work for Islamic scholars ever since its completion in December 1428. Six hundred years later, it is still in print. It is still being read. It is still essential.

This is the story of the man who wrote it.

Keeper of the Words follows Ibn Hajar from his orphaned childhood in late fourteenth-century Cairo through his formation as a scholar, his travels to Mecca and Damascus in search of the chains of transmission that connected him to the Prophet's words, his long service as chief judge in the Mamluk court, and the twenty-five years he spent at his desk building the commentary that would define his era and outlast it.

Along the way, he buried five daughters. He survived five waves of plague. He was appointed and removed from the chief judgeship multiple times. He maintained a decades-long scholarly rivalry with al-Ayni, the other great commentator of the age. He transmitted knowledge to students who would go on to become some of the most important scholars of the subsequent century - al-Sakhawi, al-Suyuti, Zakariyya al-Ansari.

When he died in February 1449, fifty thousand people came to his funeral.

Keeper of the Words is not a book for specialists in Islamic scholarship. It is a book for anyone who has ever tried to build something that lasts - who has shown up, day after day, for work that exceeds what any single person can do, that requires more than any single life contains, and who has kept going anyway because the work mattered enough to continue.

Ibn Hajar's story is, at its core, a story about what happens when a life is given completely to its purpose. He received the tradition as a gift from the teachers who formed him. He passed it on, amplified and deepened, to the students who came after. The chain has held, through his links in it, for six hundred years.
