About the Book

Every taco in this book started with the same question: what if the shell were not a tortilla.

Sometimes the answer is a bacon weave. Once it is a hollowed-out dill pickle. Of the 100 recipes here, 86 carry a genuine twist: a shell built from something that has no business holding food, a filling borrowed from an entirely different meal, or a technique that reads like a dare. The other 14 are simply very good tacos, because a book that never lets you rest is exhausting.

They are also real recipes. Every one lists a yield, a time, and a Weirdness Level from 1 to 3, so you know what you are walking into before you heat anything. Most sit at level 2: odd enough to be worth telling someone about, easy enough for a Tuesday.

A few of the hundred:

  • Instant Ramen Shell Taco - the shell is fried instant ramen
  • Frico Cheese Shell Taco - baked cheese lace, no tortilla involved
  • Cereal Milk Taco - the shell is crushed cereal
  • French Onion Soup Taco - yes, the soup, in a taco
  • Watermelon "Tuna" Taco - watermelon that eats like raw tuna
  • Chicken Pot Pie Taco - the shell is pie crust
  • The Double-Decker Cheese-Welded Taco - cheese welds two shells into one

Eight chapters run from Dessert Tacos through Breakfast, Global Fusion, Comfort Food Mashups, Seafood, Veggie and Plant-Based, and Party and Game Day, finishing with a chapter of structural dares. Ahead of them, The Basics covers the master shell techniques, the substitutions worth making, and a plain page on frying safely, because these shells get ambitious and hot oil does not care about ambition.

140 pages. Every recipe illustrated with a black-and-white line drawing, plus an A to Z index and a conversions page in the back.

Weird on the outside. Dinner on the inside.
