Francesco Mattesini propone la sua quarta pubblicazione sull'episodio di Capo Matapan, ulteriormente arricchita e aggiornata. L'opera prende le mosse dal successo ottenuto dalla base di Suda solo pochi giorni prima, per poi analizzare il drammatico disastro di Matapan, rendendo omaggio al sacrificio di 2.308 marinai della Regia Marina, caduti in quella tragica battaglia. La battaglia di Capo Matapan si svolse in due fasi distinte: un confronto di artiglieria a lunga distanza avvenuto il 28 marzo 1941, a sud dell'isola di Gaudo (Creta), e uno scontro ravvicinato durante la notte, al largo della punta occidentale del Peloponneso. In quest'ultimo frangente, la Flotta britannica del Mediterraneo riuscì a sorprendere le unità italiane grazie alle informazioni fornite dall'organizzazione crittografica Ultra, che aveva decifrato il giorno esatto della missione italiana nel Mediterraneo orientale. Decisivi furono gli attacchi degli aerosiluranti "Albacore" della portaerei Formidable. Inizialmente, essi danneggiarono la corazzata Vittorio Veneto, riducendone la velocità. Successivamente, durante un attacco notturno, immobilizzarono l'incrociatore Pola. Questo permise alla flotta britannica di colpire gli incrociatori della 1a Divisione Navale, accorsi in aiuto del Pola, cogliendoli di sorpresa. Nel corso dello scontro furono affondati gli incrociatori Zara e Fiume e i cacciatorpediniere Alfieri e Gioberti, prima di infliggere il colpo finale al Pola. L'episodio di Matapan ebbe un impatto cruciale sulla strategia della Regia Marina. A seguito della battaglia, Supermarina, l'organo operativo dello Stato Maggiore della Marina, ottenne da Benito Mussolini l'autorizzazione a limitare le operazioni navali italiane a un raggio di 100 miglia (poi ridotto a 85 miglia) dalle basi terrestri, per garantirsi la copertura aerea. Questa scelta prudente, però, permise alla Flotta britannica di operare liberamente nel Mediterraneo. Quando le navi italiane si trovarono a confrontarsi con forze apparentemente inferiori, i risultati ottenuti furono spesso deludenti, evidenziando i limiti di una strategia così vincolata.
