In der fernen Tiefe der großen Föhrdenwälder, wo sich Licht- und Schattenbäume wirr ineinander verzweigen, ragt ein hoher Hügelzug steil empor. Er zieht sich rund um ein kleines Waldmoor herum, so daß die Morgensonne seine Westseite und die Abendsonne die Ostseite bescheint, während die Strahlen der Mittagssonne nur seinen Gipfel streifen. An der Nordseite des Hügels, ganz hart an der Wand, steht zwischen Dornen und Gestrüpp eine alte, abgestorbene Eiche. Sie war einstmals eine Rieseneiche, ein Koloß von Baum; jetzt ist sie hohl der Kern ist vermodert und ganz zusammengesunken, so daß gleichsam ein Haus in dem zunderigen Stamme entstanden ist. Es riecht säuerlich da drinnen und seifig wie nach Zecken. ... Die Zeit wohnt hier und zeugt jede Sekunde, wetzt ihren Zahn und frißt, was die Zeit vor ihr übriggelassen hat. Ungefähr in halber Höhe des Stammes, an der Seite der alten Eiche nach dem Moore zu, gähnt ein großes Loch aus dem Bauch des Baumes hervor. Eine Daune flattert in einem Spinngewebe an dem oberen Rande der Öffnung. Tief unten in dem Loch, das in bezug auf das Sonnenlicht so gestellt ist, wie der Hügel selbst: die westliche Wand bekommt Morgensonne, die östliche Abendsonne, während die hintere Wand nie den Schimmer eines Strahles erhascht sitzt ein riesengroßer Vogel, und je nachdem die Sonne ihren Weg über den Himmel geht, rückt er aus dem einen Schatten in den andern. Es ist ein Nachtraubvogel: ein großer, braungefiederter Uhu! Diese alte Eiche hier im Revier hat er mit gutem Bedacht erwählt: hier sitzt er gleichsam im Ohr des Waldes; jeder Laut, der von draußen her über den See hereindringt, fährt zwischen den Hügelwänden hin und her und bis zu ihm in das Loch hinein.
