About the Book

The main aim of this book is to give a self-contained and representative cross section through present-day research in solid-state physics. This covers metallic and mesoscopic transport, localization by disorder and superconductivity, including questions related to high-temperature superconductors and to heavy fermion systems. An important part of the book is devoted to itinerant-electron magnetism, discussing paramagnons, strong correlation, magnetization fluctuations and spin density waves. All the formal tools used in these chapters are developed in the first part of the book which contains a thorough discussion of second quantization, and of perturbation theory for an arbitrary complex time path, and also describes the functional approach to Feynman diagrams, including general ward identities. Each chapter contains an extensive list of the relevant literature and a series of problems with detailed solutions which complement the main text. The book is meant as both a course and a research tool.

Review :
"This book includes a solid and concise grounding in the elements of the many-body theory and a reasonable choice of simple but fundamental topics in the three major areas of transport, superconductivity and magnetism ... a welcome addition to the range of books available to instructors, and it is also a good bet for a student to use for self-study, if he or she has had an introductory course in solid-state physics." Lu J Sham American Scientist, 1994 "This book attempts to show how the many-body technique can be used to obtain concrete results to compare with experiments in solid state physics, rather than to offer a systematic presentation of the many body theory itself ... it gives quite thorough discussions on selected subjects rather than to cover many subjects superficially ... the author gives supplementary discussions on the results and related recent developments ... By such an ingenuous construction, the author succeeded to include quite rich contents within a rather compact text of 300 pages ... this book is for an intermediate or advanced graduate course ... recommend this for library of every laboratory." Hideki Matsumoto Butsuri, 1993 "... for a volume of fewer than 360 pages of text (references and indexes excluded) which aims to discuss many-body theory and apply it to transport, superconductivity and magnetism ... the introductory sections of the applications chapters would make useful supplementary reading for any student of solid state physics ... this book is to be recommended as a second book on many-body techniques. It is a very good description of the methods and their application ..." A H Harker Contemporary Physics, 1993
