Últimas palabras es sin dudas el libro más íntimo de William S. Burroughs, uno de los malditos tutelares de la literatura contemporánea. Se trata del diario que el autor llevó durante los últimos nueve meses de su vida, y abarca todos los ámbitos de su interés: la crítica cultural, la literatura, las drogas, la ecología, sus diatribas políticas, sus amigos ignotos y famosos, los miedos y miserias de la vejez, los vaivenes de la creación literaria y su irrefrenable pasión por los gatos.

Trata también sobre la muerte -en su caso inminente-, y en esa vena reflexiona sobre el fallecimiento de dos de sus grandes amigos -Allen Ginsberg y Timothy Leary- para hacer luego un recuento de su existencia y de sus propios arrepentimientos.

En suma, esta suerte de testamento constituye un retrato conmovedor y crepuscular del mayor autor de la Beat Generation, polémico como nadie, provocador como pocos, que ni la sombra del final fue capaz de amedrentar.

William Seward Burroughs (1914- 1997) es uno de esos pocos escritores a los que cabe holgadamente el sayo de leyenda. Tanto su vida como su obra trasuntan un pesimismo total y se traducen en un perpetuo estado de rebelión y acritud social. Homosexual, ex drogadicto, viajero y tótem viviente de escritores y músicos -Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Kurt Cobain y Patti Smith se cuentan entre sus acólitos- se lo considera el escritor más representativo de la Generación Beat, pese a que él mismo se ocupó de rechazar este honor.Su novela más famosa, Naked lunch (1959), representa el clímax de su carrera literaria pero también coincide con su etapa más aguda de adicción. Otras de sus obras son Queer (1952, publicada en 1985), Junkie (1953), La máquina blanda (1961), El billete que explotó (1962), Nova Express (1964) y Los chicos salvajes (1971).Después de residir en Nueva York, Londres, París, México y Tánger, se mudó en 1981 a Lawrence, Kansas. Allí, recluido en una cabaña y acompañado por sus tres gatos y un puñado de amigos, se consagró de lleno a la pintura y al coleccionismo de armas.Últimas palabras fue editado en forma póstuma por su asistente James Grauerholz. Sus páginas son un registro diario de reflexiones que, además de cosechar en buena medida lo mejor del Burroughs ensayista, pasa revista a los fantasmas, obsesiones y personajes que marcaron su vida. Luis Chitarroni (Buenos Aires, 1958). Es escritor, editor y crítico literario. Inició su carrera como colaborador y redactor de críticas literarias en diversas revistas y medios de comunicación de la Argentina y el extranjero. Su primera novela es El carapálida (1997), reeditada en 2012. Publicó Siluetas (1992), las columnas escritas para la recordada revista literaria Babel; la colección de ensayos Mil tazas de té (2008) y las novelas Peripecias del no: Diario de una novela inconclusa y La noche politeísta (2020). Es autor además del ensayo Breve historia argentina de la literatura latinoamericana (a partir de Borges) y de la colección de reseñas, ensayos y misceláneas Pasado Mañana, de reciente publicación.
