About the Book
This book, “Operations Research and Data Analytics: Current Trends and Future Perspectives”, presents 25 peer reviewed articles from the International Conference on Industrial Engineering & Analytics (ICONIEA 2024), organized by the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, India. This compilation of articles aims to provide insights into how Operations Research (OR) and Data Analytics (DA) are used to solve real-world decision problems in business, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, climate science, safety, security, and surveillance.
The book is organized into five thematic sections that represent the significant ways ORDA are reshaping industries and scientific research. Part I focuses on importance of decision sciences and business analytics in industry. Part II covers the implementation of OR in transportation and logistics sector. Part III explores application of analytics in healthcare. Part IV explains the role of ORDA techniques in agricultural and climate sciences, and Part V examines application of ORDA in safety, security, and surveillance.

About the Author :
Dr Jhareswar Maiti, Suresh & Vidya Nair Chair Professor, is the former head and professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He is the Founder Chairman of the Center of Excellence on Safety Engineering and Analytics (CoE-SEA) at IIT Kharagpur since July 2020 and has developed its academics with PhD, MS and 2-year MTech programs. He has also developed the Safety Analytics and Virtual Reality Lab at IIT Kharagpur. His research interests include safety engineering, management & analytics, human factors and ergonomics, risk assessment and uncertainty modelling, quality management, and AI/ML/VR applications in safety. He authored the text book on "Multivariate Statistical Modeling in Engineering and Management". With more than 200 publications in the international journals and conferences of repute, Dr Maiti is the recipient of several national and international awards such as P C Mahalanobis distinguished educator award and IEOM outstanding professor of occupational safety and health award.
Mamata Jenamani is a professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, specializing in E-Business. With a research focus spanning auctions, recommender systems, social network analysis, consumer review analysis, and digital supply chain management, she has authored over 100 journal and conference publications in these areas. She has also led numerous sponsored and consulting projects, driving innovation and practical applications. As the head of an E-Business Center of Excellence, she has played a key role promoting research, industry collaboration, and technological advancements in the field.
Dr. Jitendra Kumar Jha is an Associate Professor and head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He obtained his PhD from IIT Kanpur where he worked in the area of Supply Chain Management. His main areas of teaching and research include Operations Research, Statistical Decision Modeling, Facility Planning, Supply Chain Optimization and Logistics Planning. He published/presented more than seventy papers in international journals and conferences, and his publications appeared in the leading journals like Journal of the Operational Research Society, Computers & Operations Research, Applied Mathematical Modelling, Computers & Industrial Engineering, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of Manufacturing Systems, etc. He is serving as an Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Industrial Engineering: Theory, Applications and Practice.
Dr. Akhilesh Kumar is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Previously, he worked as a Solution Architect in the consulting team at JDA Software, Bangalore. He received his B.Tech degree in Manufacturing Engineering from NIFFT (India) and Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from Wayne State University (U.S.A.) in 2005 and 2011, respectively. He has authored several technical papers in the area of analytics and optimization. His publications appeared in such journals as the International Journal of Production Economics, European Journal of Operational Research, Expert System with Applications, IEEE etc. He has carried out various research and consultancy projects with Shell, Tata Sons, Tata Metaliks, Tata Hitachi, TM International Logistics Ltd., DHI Govt. of India, European Union, UKIERI, SPARC, Ford Motor Company and Delphi Automotive LLP.
