About the Book

This book delves into the evolving landscape of microgrids, offering a comprehensive guide on their design, operation, and integration within modern electrical networks. The subject of this book is microgrids, which are pivotal in the transition toward decentralised, decarbonised, and digitalised energy systems. The book is structured around several practical use cases, detailing the methods and results that will be of particular interest to readers, such as optimisation of power flow, integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), and advanced energy management systems. It features an array of illustrations, tables, and diagrams that enhance the reader's understanding of complex concepts, along with a didactic approach that includes step-by-step guides and case studies of 30 microgrid projects from around the world.   Readers will benefit from detailed insights into the economic, technical, and social aspects of microgrids, including their role in enhancing grid resilience, improving energy efficiency, and supporting renewable integration. The book also addresses the latest technological advancements, such as digital twins and machine learning applications, that are shaping the future of microgrid design and operation. It serves as a practical manual, providing frameworks and methodologies that can be applied in real-world scenarios to optimise microgrid performance. The unique combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience makes this book a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, policymakers, and practitioners in the energy sector.

About the Author :
Ibrahim Anwar Ibrahim received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from An-Najah National University, Nablus, Palestine, in 2014, the M.Sc. degree in electrical, electronic, and systems engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Malaysia, in 2016, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, in 2022. Ibrahim is Senior Research Consultant within the energy futures team in Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF), University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Prior to joining ISF, Ibrahim was Research Associate with the School of Electrical and Data Engineering, UTS, and Visiting Researcher with CSIRO Energy Centre. His main research interests mainly lie in the scope of renewable power systems, network modelling and optimisation, distributed energy resources (DER) systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in Energy. Currently, Ibrahim is leading the development of an open-access optimal power flow tool for a techno-economic DER planning and operation in low-voltage distribution networks.   Mohammadreza Shafiee holds a B.Sc. in power systems, an M.Sc. in control systems, and an M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, where his research focused on enhancing microgrids resilience. With over thirteen years in the electrical engineering field, Mohammadreza has contributed to distribution and transmission grid optimisation, energy management systems, and the integration of renewable resources. His expertise spans developing energy models, performing economic analyses, and conducting comprehensive power system studies. His research interests include microgrids, smart grids, photovoltaic (PV) systems modeling and optimisation, power quality, and artificial intelligence for power system operation. He is Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Emera & NB Power Research Centre for Smart Grid Technologies.   Afaq Hussain received the M.Sc. degree in electronic engineering from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology (GIKI), Topi, Pakistan, and B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NUCES), Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2020 and 2017, respectively. He is currently pursuing the PhD. degree in electrical engineering with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Sydney, Australia. His current research interests include efficient control of power electronic converter and renewable energy generation.   Farid Moazzen holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical power system engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and Tarbiat Modares University, respectively, awarded in 2012 and 2015. With diverse international experiences in the electric power industry, Farid has conducted electric load analysis, power plant connection studies, and feasibility assessments for microgrid projects, alongside his involvement in demand-side management projects and the international power and energy standards survey. He has contributed significantly to high-impact peer-reviewed journals and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in electric power system engineering at UTS. Farid's research interests encompass multi-carrier energy management, machine learning-based renewable and demand forecasting, demand response, and electricity markets, reflecting his commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation in the field.
