About the Book

This book tries to sort out basic methods and technologies in shale gas exploration and development from the perspective of the industry. The book can be divided into ten chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces categories and forming conditions of shale gas resources. The second chapter studies several phases of shale gas exploration and development. It discusses methods and technical means for shale gas exploration and development from the perspective of geological surveys, tests and analysis as well as geophysics and geochemical exploration respectively from the third chapter to the sixth chapter. The seventh chapter illustrates shale gas geology and the evaluation of resources. It discusses drilling and completion, development, and economic assessments respectively from the eighth chapter to the tenth chapter. “China’s New Strategy on Energy - Shale Gas Publishing Project” covers four volumes and twenty fascicles, including geological theories of shale gas and evaluation for exploration, exploration methods and techniques for shale gas geophysics, shale gas development projects and techniques, and economic and environmental policies for shale gas technology. With relevant theories, methods and techniques in the industrial chain of shale gas, the series comes up with comprehensive sorting, illustration and discussions.

About the Author :
Jinchuan Zhang, editor-in-chief of Geology of Shale Gas in China, editor-in-chief of the book series "China's New Energy Strategy--Shale Gas Publication Project", director of the Energy Experiment Center of China University of Geosciences (Beijing), professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Energy, director of the Key Laboratory of Shale Gas Exploration and Evaluation of the Ministry of Land and Resources, executive director of the Shale Gas Research Base. He is also the executive chairman of the 376th Xiangshan Scientific Conference (Basic Geological Problems of Shale Gas in China and the Basis of Exploration and Development, 2010), the technical chief of the project of "Investigation and Evaluation of National Shale Gas Resource Potential and Selection of Favorable Zones", and one of the earliest explorers who started to introduce and systematically study shale gas in China. He is one of the first explorers to introduce and systematically study shale gas in China. He is a member of the editorial boards of Petroleum Journal, Petroleum Exploration and Development, and Natural Gas Industry, and has presided over and accomplished four National Natural Science Foundation of China projects (40172052, 40272062, 40472073, and 40672087), and has published three monographs. Jianghui Ding, senior engineer at China National Petroleum Corporation, is a practical expert in the exploration and development of shale gas. With long-term dedication to shale gas reservoir evaluation and engineering technology research, he has accumulated extensive field experience in the commercial development of shale gas in key areas such as the Sichuan Basin. His research has played a vital role in supporting the large-scale and cost-effective development of shale gas in China. As one of the principal authors, he systematically summarizes the integrated engineering-geology practices in domestic shale gas development in this book. Haikuan Nie, professor-level senior engineer at the Sinopec Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute, is a renowned shale gas geologist. He primarily focuses on research related to shale gas accumulation geological theories and target evaluation, having made significant contributions to the discovery and exploration breakthroughs of the Fuling Shale Gas Field. He possesses unique insights into the enrichment patterns of shale gas in complex structural areas of Southern China, and has published a series of high-level academic papers. This book encapsulates his core understanding of shale gas geological theory innovation and exploration practices. Wei Dang, professor at Xi'an Shiyou University, is dedicated to teaching and research in hydrocarbon accumulation geology and shale gas geology. He emphasizes the integration of petroleum geology theories with the unique characteristics of shale gas, conducting in-depth explorations into the microscopic pore structure of shale reservoirs and gas-bearing property evaluation. As a university educator, he has cultivated a cohort of professionals for the industry and actively promotes industry-academia-research collaboration. In this book, he is primarily responsible for systematizing fundamental geological theories and elucidating hydrocarbon accumulation mechanisms, thereby constructing a comprehensive knowledge framework for readers. Xuan Tang, professor and doctoral supervisor at China University of Geosciences (Beijing), has achieved significant accomplishments in the fields of shale sedimentology and geochemistry. He focuses on fundamental geological issues such as the paleoenvironmental context of shale formation, mechanisms of organic matter enrichment, and fine characterization of shale lithofacies. With a rigorous academic approach, he excels in revealing the formation and evolution patterns of shale gas reservoirs from the perspective of sedimentary origins. In this book, he systematically elaborates on the sedimentary characteristics and distribution patterns of major shale layers in China. Ali Saud Madni, Professor at University of the Punjab, the oldest university in Pakistan. He has previously served as a visiting professor at the University of Peshawar and the Aga Khan University. From 2018 to 2022, he was a visiting scholar at China University of Geosciences (Beijing). He specializes in translation within the fields of chemistry and materials science.
