About the Book

This book provides a comprehensive exploration of the transformative impact of microbial biotechnology on textile innovation. Through a series of in-depth chapters, it investigates how microbial processes and products are reshaping the textile industry towards greater sustainability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The book begins by introducing fundamental concepts, emphasizing the significance of microbial biotechnology in textile applications. It then delves into specific areas of microbial intervention within the textile supply chain, starting with the utilization of microbial enzymes for eco-friendly bioprocessing. Readers will gain insights into the mechanisms and applications of these enzymes in processes such as desizing, scouring, bleaching, and finishing, highlighting their advantages over traditional chemical methods. The book further explores the potential of microbial pigments as bio-based alternatives to synthetic dyes. It examines the diversity of microbial pigments, their extraction methods, and their successful integration into textile dyeing processes. Additionally, the text investigates the use of microbial biosurfactants for textile cleaning and finishing, showcasing their effectiveness and sustainability compared to conventional surfactants. A significant focus is placed on emerging technologies like green nanomaterials derived from microbial sources, detailing their synthesis, properties, and applications in textile biotechnology. The utilization of microbial biofilms on textile surfaces is also explored, illuminating their role in enhancing durability and functionality. Moreover, the book addresses critical challenges such as textile waste management through microbial biotechnology solutions. It presents innovative approaches for biodegradation, effluent treatment, and waste reduction using microbial processes, contributing to circular economy principles within the textile sector. In the last, the book navigates through regulatory and ethical considerations associated with microbial biotechnology adoption in textiles. It guides readers on compliance frameworks and ethical best practices, ensuring responsible and sustainable implementation. This book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and students in biotechnology, microbiology, textile engineering, and related disciplines. It equips readers with the knowledge and practical insights needed to leverage microbial biotechnology effectively for textile innovation, making it essential reading for those seeking to drive positive change within the textile industry.

His academic journey also includes roles as a faculty member at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Antibiotics, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. His research is primarily dedicated to three key areas: microbial biotechnology, antimicrobial resistance, and gut microbiota. Over the years, Dr. Khurshid has made significant contributions to the field, boasting a portfolio of more than 160 published articles in esteemed scientific journals, collectively carrying an impressive impact factor of approximately 450. Additionally, he has authored over 28 book chapters featured in publications by renowned publishers such as Elsevier and Springer. Dr. Khurshid has been serving as a referee for numerous international journals, including but not limited to Briefings in Bioinformatics, Frontiers in Microbiology, Cancer Letters, Expert Review of Anti-infective Therapy, Microbial Ecology, and Lancet. Furthermore, he holds esteemed positions as an editorial board member for various high-impact journals affiliated with Frontiers Group, Hindawi, and BMC group. Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Khurshid is recognized as an esteemed speaker, regularly invited to share his insights and expertise at conferences and symposiums.

Dr. Muhammad Aamer Mehmood is a Professor and Group Leader of the BioEcoTech Research Cluster at the Department of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, Government College University Faisalabad, Pakistan. He is also a Founding Executive Board Member and the Secretary-General of the Asian Federation of Biotechnology, Pakistan Chapter. His research team is dedicated to optimizing processes for the sustainable utilization of bio-resources, including wastewater recycling, resource recovery, and the biotransformation of biomass into bioproducts such as biofertilizers, industrial enzymes, biopolymers, and functional foods. They achieve this by using microalgae, cyanobacteria, and fungi as microbial cell factories within a multiproduct biorefinery framework.

Dr. Muhammad Kashif is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and researcher at Emerson University Multan, Pakistan. He obtained his MSc in Chemistry from Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, followed by an MPhil in Chemistry with distinction from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He subsequently completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Drug Designing with distinction (Mención Honorífica) under the supervision of Prof. Dr Gildardo Rivera Sánchez at the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, CBG, IPN, Mexico. One of his notable achievements is a patent registered in Mexico which stems directly from his PhD work. His research interests encompass drug design, environmental chemistry, biochemistry, enzyme inhibition, medicinal chemistry, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics. Dr. Kashif has received several accolades, including the Best Student Award, Best Thesis Award, and second position for Best Drug Design at the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC). Dr. Kashif has authored or co-authored approximately 25 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. His ongoing research is dedicated to advancing medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, with a particular focus on computational drug design and the biochemical study of therapeutically important enzymes.
