About the Book

The stories in this autofiction came from the intimate perspective of the author, about the life of a Chinese couple of intellectuals and their families and friends in the years from the late 1940s to the late 1970s, when China was in one of its most extraordinary and upheaval-ridden periods in modern Chinese history. The tumultuous journey in life has taught the author understanding, determination and, most importantly, optimism.

Review :
This book tells the story of an intellectual family and the years they lived through from the 1940s to the 1970s. Though the tone is somewhat heavy, it carries great historical significance. Perhaps because it's a semi-autobiographical novel written by a friend's mother, that period of history has never felt so real to me. Land reform, the Suppression of Counterrevolutionaries, the Three-Anti and Five-Anti Campaigns, the Anti-Rightist Campaign, the collectivization movement in the countryside, the Great Leap Forward, the Socialist Education Movement, the Four Cleanups Movement, the Cultural Revolution... nearly every political campaign impacted their family. Wave after wave, they were at times pushed to the forefront, at other times dragged to the bottom, constantly rising and falling in the tides of history. It makes you realize how hard it was just to survive-how being safe and together as a family was true happiness. It also showed me the strength, resilience, and optimism of one remarkable woman.
