About the Book

This volume presents selected contributions from the 7th International Conference on Ocean Engineering (ICOE 2025), hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. The book brings together recent developments in ocean engineering and highlights their relevance to the emerging blue economy, with emphasis on sustainable use of ocean resources, resilient infrastructure, and technology-driven marine solutions.

The chapters cover a broad range of themes, including offshore renewable energy, coastal and offshore structures, marine hydrodynamics, ocean energy systems, offshore geotechnics, subsea engineering, marine transportation, and climate-resilient coastal development. Several contributions also explore the growing role of computational methods, data-driven approaches, and artificial intelligence in addressing complex ocean engineering problems.

The book reflects both academic research and industry-oriented applications, presenting experimental investigations, numerical modelling, field studies, and design methodologies relevant to present-day marine challenges. It also discusses technologies and engineering practices that support the sustainable development of marine resources while addressing environmental and operational considerations.

Intended for researchers, practicing engineers, policymakers, and graduate students, this volume provides current perspectives and practical insights into advances shaping the future of ocean engineering and the blue economy.

About the Author :

Abdus Samad is Professor and Head of the Department of Ocean Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. His research interests include ocean energy systems, design optimization, fluid machinery, and artificial intelligence applications in marine engineering. He has authored and edited several books, contributed chapters to international volumes, and published extensively in journals and conference proceedings. He also holds patents related to engineering applications and has received recognition for his contributions to research and education. His work focuses on advancing sustainable marine technologies and supporting the development of the blue economy.

Dr. Poguluri Sunny Kumar is Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras. He completed his M.Tech. and Ph.D. at IIT Madras and subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at Jeju National University, South Korea, where he also served as a lecturer. His research interests include offshore structures, hydrodynamics, and marine engineering applications. He has published several research articles in various international journals and conferences, advancing offshore and ocean engineering research.

Dr. Bithin Ghorai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras. He previously served at IIT Jodhpur and as a postdoctoral researcher at TU Delft, the Netherlands. He obtained his Ph.D. in Offshore Geotechnical Engineering from IIT Bombay and M.Tech. from IIT Madras. His research focuses on offshore geotechnics, including foundations, anchoring systems, subsea pipelines, and seabed-interacting systems associated with renewable energy infrastructure and deep-sea applications. He collaborates with researchers from several international institutions and actively contributes to research in sustainable offshore engineering systems.

Dr. Vijay K. G. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras. Prior to joining academia, he worked in the subsea flexibles industry with Oceaneering and Technip. He obtained his M.Tech. from IIT Madras and Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur. His research interests include numerical and experimental modelling of fluid-structure interactions in coastal and offshore systems, with emphasis on risers, wave energy converters, floating offshore wind turbines, and subsea umbilicals, flowlines, and risers (SURF). His work combines industrial experience with academic research in offshore engineering applications.

Prof. M. A. Atmanand is a former Director of the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai, and currently serves as Adjunct Professor at IIT Madras and Visiting Professor at NIT Calicut. His areas of expertise include deep-sea technology, marine instrumentation, underwater vehicles, and the blue economy. He has held important responsibilities in national and international ocean technology programs, including leadership roles associated with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO). He has published extensively in ocean engineering and has received several recognitions for his contributions to marine technology and ocean research.
