About the Book

The present research work analyses the selected collections of poems written by Imtiaz Dharker who implicitly and explicitly discloses inner as well as outer side of human society. The present work also tries to analyze existence of a woman in the male dominated social system. The First Chapter of this work is divided into three sub-parts. The first part deals with the brief history of Indian English poetry. The second part deals with the brief introduction of the life, persona and works of Imtiaz Dharker. The third part contains the short discussion of the six major collections of poetry by Imtiaz Dharker. The Second Chapter is divided into two parts, such as i) Purdah and Other Poems: The Purdah is the first major collection of Imtiaz Dharker. Here, she raises the issues about women's helplessness, pain, victimization, subordination, and their place in patriarchal society. ii) Postcards from God is written in the wake of Bombay explosions of 1993. This collection tries to reach out through poems as well as drawings. It focuses on those who are disturbed by the development of aggressive communalism of various hues in India. The Third Chapter consists of a discussion on her collections I Speak for the Devil and The Terrorist at My Table. Poems from I Speak for the Devil, discover the place of women in contemporary societies, both Eastern and Western. In The Terrorist at My Table, Dharker reveals the growing yearning to fight for their rights. In the Fourth Chapter, the work deals with Imtiaz Dharker's vision towards life; her perspective reflected in Leaving Fingerprints and Over the Moon is about joy and sadness, of mourning and celebration, music and feet, Church bells, beds, bad language, and sudden quietness, etc. The Fifth Chapter of this work would conclude the whole discussion. It would include a brief explanation of the writings of Imtiaz Dharker in an analytical way.
