About the Book

This book brings together the papers presented at the round table, held in Belgrade in May 2012, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL). The essays explore the key developments of constitutionalism and constitutional law since the foundation of the IACL in Belgrade, then Yugoslavia, in 1981. Leading scholars in the field analyse a wide range of issues making obvious that a modern statist constitutionalism is going beyond its foundational principles: constitutional democracy challenged by globalisation and multiculturalism; constitutional aspects of democratic transition and consolidation in Latin America, Central and South-Eastern Europe, and the SADC states; internationalization of constitutionalism and constitutionalization of international law. New constitutional law topics and their impact on teaching constitutional law are also included. The volume concludes with the contributions giving account of the foundation of the IACL and its developing contexts.

Table of Contents:
Constitutional Democracy Challenged by Globalisation and Multiculturalism; Towards New Constitutional Politics of Citizenship, Identity and Minority Protection; Strong Religion and Weak Minorities: A Cautionary Tale from Europe; Democratic Transition and Consolidation - Constitutions in Action; Central European Democratic Transition: the Paradigm of a Constitutional Revolution; The Particularity of Democratic Transition of the New States in the Western Balkans - the Case of Former Yugoslav Republics; Latin American Constitutionalism between Universality and Cultural Particularity; Rule of Law in the SADC Region: 1981-2011; Internationalization of Constitutionalism and Constitutionalization of International Law The Functions of International and Comparative Law in Constitutional Adjudication: the Colombian Case; Multi-level System of Human Rights Protection in Europe - A View from the Central and Eastern Europe; Les references mutuelle entre la Cour europeenne et la Cour interamericaine des droits de l'homme : de l'influence au dialogue?; Reference to National Courts' Precedents in the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights; Teaching Constitutional Law in the 21st Century; Important Developments in Comparative Constitutional Law; Les changements necessaire dans l'enseignement du droit constitutionnel; Commemorating 30 Years of the International Association of Constitutional Law.
