About the Book

Is AI going to take your job?

It's the question millions of professionals are asking right now. The answers range from "AI will replace you tomorrow" to "it's all hype." Neither is right - and neither tells you what to actually do.

Most AI career books give you the same generic advice: upskill, stay adaptable. They skip the more important question: why do some jobs get disrupted by AI while others don't - even when AI can technically do them?

Anirudh Bajaj is a Microsoft AI insider, Wharton MBA, and father of two. He wrote this book to replace the anxiety around AI and jobs with something that's been missing - an honest, unbiased guide based on real data of how AI is actually being used on the ground.

Indispensable analyzes real interactions from users across Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude, and introduces the PRIME framework - five real-world barriers that explain why AI capability doesn't automatically translate into job disruption. Applied to 100+ occupations in a detailed Field Guide, it tells you which parts of your specific job AI can actually do - and which it can't. Endorsed by leading Wharton professors and researchers in the human-AI space, this is the most rigorous guide available on how your work will actually change.

What's inside:

  • Practical guidance on where and how to use AI in your work right now - based on what it can and cannot do, with specific guidance by occupation
  • The PRIME framework: the real barriers to AI adoption and why some jobs are far safer than the headlines suggest
  • A Field Guide covering 100+ occupations with predictions on how each will change
  • What agentic AI, humanoid robots, and other emerging technologies mean for specific careers
  • Why human skills are becoming harder to replace - and how to position yourself around them
  • The societal questions that will shape whether AI serves humanity or undermines it

Whether you are a professional choosing a career or protecting one, this book is for anyone feeling anxiety about how AI might change how we work and live.

About the Author :
Anirudh Bajaj is a Senior Product Manager at Microsoft and the author of Indispensable: Your Career Guide for the Age of AI. At Microsoft, he builds the AI tools that help large companies understand and reskill their people, giving him a rare, front-row view of how AI is actually changing work and how it's being adopted, not just how it's hyped. A Wharton MBA with over a decade across engineering, consulting, and technology, he has built original frameworks analyzing how AI will reshape more than 120 occupations, endorsed by leading Wharton faculty and researchers in the Human-AI space. As a father of two, he wanted to go to the source of truth: data and research, clubbed with the reality of adoption today. The book is a social initiative: an honest, unbiased guide that reduces anxiety about the future and offers practical advice on how AI might change how we work and live.

Review :

"An insider's guide as to how AI has already changed jobs and where the opportunities for human skills will be greatest. The best insights yet for planning a career." - Peter Cappelli, Director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources; leading authority on the Future of work

"How AI is going to reshape our workplaces and careers may be the single most important question facing us today. I can think of nobody who is better placed to answer this question than Anirudh. His extensive experience in implementing AI within workplaces allows him to cut through the wild speculation and deliver specific, accurate advice on what AI will mean for a broad variety of jobs. His book is well titled." - Matthew Bidwell, Professor of Management, The Wharton School; Co-Director of Wharton People Analytics

"Anyone trying to figure out how AI will affect their career needs this book. With sharp analysis, practical frameworks, and a career guide that covers every major occupation, this is the most useful resource I've seen on how to thrive in the age of AI." - Stefano Puntoni, Co-Director of Wharton Human-AI Research; author of Decision-Driven Analytics

"In a world of AI hype, Indispensable is a breath of fresh air-grounded in real data, intensely practical, and profoundly human. It shows that while AI can automate routine tasks, it will never replicate our emotional intelligence, creative spark, or strategic vision-skills that are inherently irreplaceable in the age of AI. This book reaffirms that our uniquely human strengths aren't just safe from AI; they're the key to thriving alongside it." - Yelena Mammadova, Ed.D, Director of AI Transformation Strategy, Microsoft
