About the Book

The Vision Splendid BOOK III by D. K. Broster and G. Winifred Taylor is a novel set in early 19th century England, focusing on the life of Horatia Grenville, a well-educated yet unmarried woman caught between personal aspirations and societal expectations. The story opens with Horatia in her tranquil garden, contemplating her desire for intellectual fulfillment while wrestling with the pressures to marry and conform to the traditional roles of women in her time. Raised as a parson's daughter, Horatia has been shaped by an unconventional upbringing that fosters her aversion to societal norms, particularly the expectation that women should prioritize marriage over personal ambition. As the novel unfolds, Horatia's internal struggles are complicated by the presence of Tristram Hungerford, a family friend who had once proposed to her. Their encounters reveal unspoken feelings and growing tensions, reflecting the societal shifts of the period. The narrative explores the conflict between individual desire and the traditional roles expected of women, blending themes of intellectual independence, love, and the evolving roles of women in the early 19th century. Through Horatia's journey, the novel examines the tension between personal growth and societal conformity.

About the Author :
D. K. Broster and G. Winifred Taylor were British authors known for their collaborative work in the early 20th century. Though their individual careers varied, together they produced works that explored social themes and relationships within historical settings. Dorothy Kathleen Broster (2 September 1877 - 7 February 1950), commonly known as D. K. Broster, was an English novelist and short-story writer, best remembered for her historical romances set in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Grassendale Park, near Liverpool, to Thomas Mawdsley Broster and Emilie Kathleen Gething, she was raised in a family with strong intellectual and artistic influences. Broster's works often explore themes of love, loyalty, and personal growth against the backdrop of significant historical events. Their collaboration in The Vision Splendid exemplifies these concerns, particularly the way their female protagonist, Horatia Grenville, grapples with the expectations placed upon her as a woman in early 19th century England. Through their writing, Broster and Taylor offered readers insight into the pressures women faced to conform to traditional roles while also exploring the potential for personal development and intellectual independence in a changing world.
