Biochemistry today has made spectacular progress in unraveling the mysteries of animate nature. This progress has allowed us to gain deeper insight into the principles of vital activity and has to a very significant extent stimulated the development of applied disciplines, especially medicine. Microbial metabolism is the main contribution for the bodily decay of all organisms after death. Many eukaryotic microorganisms are heterotrophic by predation or parasitism, properties also found in some bacteria such as Bdellovibrio (an intracellular parasite of other bacteria, causing death of its victims) and Myxobacteria such as Myxococcus (predators of other bacteria which are killed and lysed by cooperating swarms of many single cells of Myxobacteria). Most pathogenic bacteria can be viewed as heterotrophic parasites of humans or the other eukaryotic species they affect. Growth can be defined as an orderly increase of all chemical compounds in a cell/population resulting in an increase in mass of the cell/population, i.e. the increase in mass is always accompanied by a comparable increase in all other measurable properties of the cell/population during growth. All the topics are narrated in an interesting and systematic manner, making it an indispensable book that provides a clear understanding of the complexity of this book.

About the Author :
R. Parthasarathy is a Professor, Faculty of Planning and Public Policy at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He has about 25 years of teaching and research experience and has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley; Professor at and later Director of Gujarat Institute of Development Research, Ahmedabad. He has been a member of many government committees and has also been a consultant to DFID, ADB and other national and international organisations. He also works closely with NGOs. His research interests include, water management, large-scale irrigation systems, natural resources, infrastructure management and environmental economics. He has published 3 books and over 70 articles. Ravindra H. Dholakia has been a Professor of Economics at IIM, Ahmedabad since 1985. He has about 34 years of experience in teaching Economics to different groups like students, executives, policy makers and senior government officials. He has practical experience in high-powered policy making and evaluation bodies in both state and central governments such as the Sixth Central Pay Commission in India (2006-8), State Public Finance Reforms Committee (1998-2001), Expert Committee to Restructure Public Sector Units (2004-7) and Committee to Restructure Public Debt (2003-5), appointed by the Government of Gujarat. Currently, he is a member of the High Level Expert Committee appointed by the Government of India to suggest measures for efficient management of public expenditure (2010-11). He has published 39 monographs, 17 books, and about 130 research papers and international cases on economic planning and policy reforms.
