Solid Waste Management in Indian Cities: Status and Emerging Practices

Geochemistry is the science that uses the tools and principles of chemistry to explain the mechanisms behind major geological systems such as the Earth's crust and its oceans. The realm of geochemistry extends beyond the Earth, encompassing the entire Solar System and has made important contributions to the understanding of a number of processes including mantle convection, the formation of planets and the origins of granite and basalt. Environmental geology, like hydrogeology, is an applied science concerned with the practical application of the principles of geology in the solving of environmental problems. It is a multidisciplinary field that is closely related to engineering geology and, to a lesser extent, to environmental geography. Engineering geology is the application of the geologic sciences to engineering practice for the purpose of assuring that the geologic factors affecting the location, design, construction, operation and maintenance of engineering works are recognized and adequately provided for. Engineering geologists investigate and provide geologic and geotechnical recommendations, analysis, and design associated with human development. The realm of the engineering geologist is essentially in the area of earth-structure interactions, or investigation of how the earth or earth processes impact human made structures and human activities. This book is a compilation of available information, output of research and field experiences of the authors on the subject, that includes techniques to protect the ecosystem and hence to prevent land degradation.

About the Author :
Prof. Darshini Mahadevia teaches at Faculty of Planning and Public Policy, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Educated at CEPT, Ahmedabad, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and Ph. D from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Has been visiting scholar at number of University abroad and has also collaborated and collaborating with Universities abroad for research work. Has wide experience of working with NGOs in India and have number of publications in books and academic journals on urban issues, human and gender development, and environment. Prof. Jeanne M. Wolfe is an Emeritus Professor at the School of Urban Planning, McGill University, Montreal. Has been educated at London University, the University of Western Ontario and McGill. She was Director of the School of Urban Planning from 1988 to 1999. She has worked extensively in the Caribbean region, helped in setting up a planning program at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad with CIDA aid, and has participated in projects in China and India. Her research interests include housing governance and institutional change, urban policy, and international development studies and have widely published in a variety of academic journals.
