About the Book

Author, poet, lyricist, screenwriter, film director, family man, and winner of every prestigious national and international award for his vast body of work—from the Jnanpith to the Oscar, there isn’t much territory left uncharted by Gulzar. Dhoop Aane Do, in a way, can be considered his autobiography in that it is replete with anecdotes, travel notes, real-life experiences and events that occurred in and shaped his life. The book contains pages plucked from his memories and will take the reader back in time, to his growing-up years, his personal and professional struggles and successes in Mumbai, the experiences he faced during Partition, the different people he met while making films, how the Covid lockdowns affected him, etc. There is poetry too, which underlines the versatility of the author. A deeply personal account made more interesting because of some rare photographs interspersed with the text, Dhoop Aane Do covers his life and career, traversing several eras, thus promising to bring to the reader several unknown facets of Gulzar. It will be an unmissable addition to the treasure trove of books by this literary and cinema legend.

About the Author :
Gulzar, who has been selected as the recipient of India’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith Award 2024, for Urdu, is one of India’s leading poets. He has won several prestigious awards, notable among them being the Sahitya Akademi Award (2002), the Padma Bhushan (2004) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2014). Gulzar is a scriptwriter and film director, and has written lyrics for mainstream Hindi cinema that have become immensely popular. The song ‘Jai Ho’ from the film Slumdog Millionaire brought him international fame, including an Oscar and a Grammy. His poetry and fiction (and several of their translations), as well as books for children, are much loved by his readers. Gulzar is the founder of Arushi, an organisation working for physically challenged children. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Review :
Dhoop Aane Do is a treasure trove of memories, told through the masterful lens of one of India’s greatest literary figures. A must-read for those who appreciate simple yet profound storytelling that leaves a lasting impression.
