About the Book

The present book is a collection of 9 papers and notes from the field in the area of community participation. This edited volume is a sequel to Volume One of the series "Learning to Share," edited by members of the SRIJ group and published in 1997 by the Concept Publishing Company. The contributors to this volume are development practitioners, engaged in Participatory Action Research (PAR). Their contributions in this volume are the outputs of "participatory research" based on open-ended field inquiry and action as distinct from conventional "academic research." The present edited volume is a step forward in continuing with the process of learning in community participation. Often there is considerable experience to be shared by development practitioners who organize and facilitate such participation and also help in sustaining it. In this direction, the contributions livelihood and participatory impact assessment. The book provides a glimpse of such activities in different areas and locations as contributed by field practitioners. The book is meant for development practitioners, governmental and non-governmental organizations, donor agencies, action researchers and other involved in the area of community participation.

About the Author :
This book has been edited by Dr. Neela Mukherjee and Dr. Bratindi Jena on behalf of the SRIJ group on participatory development, which is an informal and a non-funded group of professionals involved in such activities. The SRIJ groups cuts across different disciplines, organizations and work areas. Dr. Neela Mukherjee is currently a development consultant to multiple organizations, action researcher, teacher and a trainer. Formerly, a Professor of Economics at the LBS National Academy of Administration Mussoorie, Dr. Mukherjee's research interests are topical and varied. An alumna of the London School of Economics and Political Science, her major areas of current research includes participatory development, participatory methods, community perspectives and environment and trade-related issues. Dr. Bratindi Jena, currently employed as a Programme officer at Action Aid India, is responsible for planning and implementation of projects in North Bihar. Earlier, she worked as a research officer at IDS, Jaipur on a research project on livelihood adaptation: gender, civil society and public action. She obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology from Delhi University in 1995 and was also a visiting fellow in the autumn of 1997, at the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex, UK.
