About the Book

This work reports the results of a study of the incidence of cancers diagnosed in young Israelis under the age of 30 years. It draws on data collected from 1960 to 1989 and maintained in the cancer registry of Israel, a country largely peopled by migrants and their children. The study examined the incidence of cancer separately for migrants born outside Israel, the offspring of migrants, and the third generation of children born in Israel of Israel-born parents. The study was designed to gain insight into the relative importance of genetic factors and environmental exposure in the aetiology of childhood cancer. For several of the more common cancers in this age group, the study found little variation in risk according to the continent of origin. Cancers in this group include the leukaemias, central nervous system tumours, and the sarcomas. Several other cancers showed marked differences in incidence; the persistence of these differences between the generations suggests that inherited susceptibility plays an important aetiological role. Cancers in this group include melanoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, testis cancer, and possibly Ewing's sarcoma. For a final group of cancers, where the differences rapidly diminished or were lost between generations, findings suggest that some environmental exposure, altered by migration, was a major causative factor. Included in this group are colorectal, cervix, thyroid, and ovarian cancers.
