In questa monografia sullo scrittore siciliano Giuseppe Bonaviri si analizzano alcuni tratti caratteristici della sua scrittura narrativa, come l'ironia, l'ossimoro, l'autobiografico ed il fantastico. La suddivisione in quattro capitoli evidenzia gli obiettivi che Musarra si è proposto: "Uno scrittore di frontiera", "I cerchi insulari in Bonaviri", "La parola tra poesia e scienza", "Dell'ironia, dell'ossimoro e dell'autobiografico". L'analisi non segue la linea cronologica, ma utilizza secondo necessità l'intero corpus dell'opera dello scrittore siciliano per mostrare l'importanza, la continuità e/o il rinnovamento di alcune delle modalità narrative più significative. Un indice delle opere citate facilita comunque la consultazione delle osservazioni riguardanti un determinato romanzo o racconto. Nonostante l'impostazione, che privilegia lo studio delle strategie testuali e delle modalità costitutive sia formali che concettuali, evitando il più possibile ogni procedimento riassuntivo e ripetitivo, il volume è utile anche per prendere un primo contatto con l'opera narrativa di Bonaviri, poiché ne spiega la funzionalità e pertinenza di alcuni dei tratti costitutivi primari. Musarra arriva alla conclusione che la forza trainante e le tensioni soggiacenti sono affini dal primo romanzo Il sarto della stradalunga (1954) al più recente Silvinia (1997), dato che al livello profondo vi è sempre il tentativo di riscrivere il proprio "tempo vissuto" per dare a questo ed ai personaggi via via coinvolti (da quelli reali come parenti e amici a quelli creati dalla fantasia dello scrittore) una continuità all'interno della pagina scritta. Il mondo oggettivo e quello immaginario vengono a creare un complesso intreccio che coinvolge sia la diegesi che la parola nelle sue varie sequenze. L'ironia e l'ossimoro sono gli stilemi dominanti non soltanto come figure retoriche superficiali, ma anche come elementi generativi primari. Per tale complessa impostazione discorsiva, che privilegia sia la mescolanza di vari registri linguistici che l'intertestualità e l'intratestualità, Bonaviri si colloca, in modo sempre personale ed originale, in quella corrente che oggi si è soliti definire con l'etichetta di "postmoderno".
