About the Book

A cooperation between Cordaid and the Institute for Housing and Urban Devlopment Studies (IHS), this book depicts the variety of situations found in the seven different cities herein described. The studies look at the potential of participatory processes in urban management in the different cities as well as factors that are hindering or facilitating them. Special attention is given to Cordaid's focus areas such as urban liveability, security of tenure, social cohesion, clean and healthy environment, income generation and the informal sector. It shows that there are a number of local conditions and determinants whether or not participatory channels exist, and whether this provides the type of space for collaboration between different stakeholders and if this ultimately enables the formulation and implementation of pro-poor policies. The main motivation to write this book is the wealth of knowledge that was generated about participatory processes in seven different cities in the world through the city auditing and process mapping research carried out by IHS. "Knocking at the Mayor's Door" makes the cases available to a wider audience. The book is authored by well-known practitioners and researchers associated with IHS who have extensive experience and involvement in the cities of Davao (the Pilippines), Tirana (Albania), Awassa (Ethiopia), Lima (Peru), Recife (Brazil), Yaounde (Cameroon) and Nairobi (Kenya). The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), based in the Netherlands, is an international centre of excellence associated with the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and operating on a global scale that offers specialized post graduate education, training, advisory services and applied research in the field of urban management. Cordaid forms together with Memisa, Mensen in Nood and Vastenaktie one of the biggest international development organisations.
