About the Book

In today's highly competitive environment, the transputer market provides Europe with a great number of important assets. From the first transputer with its four links and OCCAM language, which opened the door to a whole series of distributed memory machines, to the T9000 with the C104 and the standardization of software programs, progress in this field has come a long way. The new transputer generation, the prospects for distributed memory machines, the major projects planned by the EEC and other organizations, the state of the art in performance evaluation, scheduling and message passing are the topics which this work addresses. Papers are presented on the following research themes: architecture; operating systems; applications, particularly in the field of graphics; performance; placement and communication structures; and automatic parallelization.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Invited papers: performance evaluation as a integral part of system design, U. Herzog; scheduling issues in heterogeneous multiprocessor systems, S.K. Tripathi and D.A. Menasce; parallel universal message-passing and applications, A.J.G. Hey; parallel readout of the CERN RMH system using transputers, J.L. Pages, et al. Part 2 Petri nets: analysis of the communications structure of Occam2 programs using Petri nets, C. Johmen and F. Mourlin; comparison of Occam program placements by a generalized stochastic Petri net model, O. Botti and F. De Cindio. Part 3 Applications: the implementation of an extended radiosity on the VOXAR machine, J.P. Jessel and R. Coubet; a cognitive strategy to achieve an automatic extraction of characters areas in noisy images, J. Labiche, et al; comparison of thinning algorithms on distributed memory machines, S. Ubeda. Part 4 Systems: massively parallel programming environments - how to map parallel objects on transputers, A. Corradi, et al; CHORUS/MiX, a distributed UNIX, on multicomputers, B. Hermann and L. Philippe; PCserver - networking PC-hosted transputers, L. Rizzo. Part 5 Performance: algorithmic performance on a distributed memory MIMD computer - a case study, P. Manneback and J. Qin; performance evaluation of VCR1.8c - a virtual router for transputer networks, J.P. Kitajima and B. Plateau; OCCAM prototyping from hierarchical Petri nets, F. Breant and E. Paviot-Adet; experimental evaluation of internal sorting algorithms on transputers, P. Lenzi, et al; a framework to parallel monitoring on distributed memory multicomputers, M. van Riek and B. Tourancheau. Part 6 Architectures: designing and programming a reconfigurable parallel architecture, V. David, et al; transputers and programmable logic for neural networks, Y. Autret, et al; a transputer inconnection bus for hard real-time systems, J.P. Calvez and O. Pasquier; Mars 94 - a fault-tolerant multi-transputer array for space applications, H. De S Castro and M.P. Gough; actnet, P. Darche and G. Nowak; optimum interconnection topologies for the compute-aggregate-broadcase operation on a ttransputer network, A. Ferscha and G. Dotsis; synchronous flow digraph parallel algorithms on transputers, applied to automatic parallelization, P. Lalevee and F. Meunier. Part 7 Poster session: dynamic link interconnections for the transputers, P. Vincent and W. Zou; load blancing algorithms, M. Kamel; fault tolerance by a distributed software control, E. Renaux; an Occam parallel simulator of learning automata networks, F. Seredynski; a transputer network for parallel radiosity, C. Renaud and E. Lepretre; real time applications with transputers, M. Benoit, et al; communicating active components for concurrent applications on parallel machines, L. Courtrai, et al; a transputer-based real-time simulator for LAN interconnections, J.L. Jacquemin, et al; morpho-functional simulation of multi-layer neural network on a transputer based machine, L. Boutkhil, et al.
