In Goethes Werken ist die Ehe weder im christlich-traditionellen noch im sittlich-moralischen Bereich eine absolute Instanz. Gerade in den Werken der Weimarer Klassik stellt die Frage, wie sich ideale Zielvorstellungen der Ehe in einer absolutistischen Gesellschaft verwirklichen lassen, ein zentrales Problem der Auslegung dar. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht den Fragen nach, warum Goethes literarisches Werk die Möglichkeit eines dauerhaften Eheglücks verneint und was die Vielseitigkeit der Mann-Frau-Beziehungen bedeuten soll.
