L’enquête a pour origine un texte de Tacite peu commenté jusqu’à présent, non expliqué de manière satisfaisante. En épilogue des faits mémorables de 25, l’auteur évoque, parmi d’autres, la disparition au cours de l’année, du sénateur L. Pison, victime d’un assassinat à Termes d’Espagne alors qu’il remplaçait physiquement le gouverneur provincial retenu à Rome par la volonté de l’empereur Tibère. De la famille des Calpurnii Pisones, L. Pison attire l’attention en raison de sa parenté avec Cn. Pison soupçonné à tort d’avoir fait périr Germanicus, à cause d’un comportement violent et rebelle en Syrie quelques années auparavant. L’épisode criminel fait l’objet d’une étude exhaustive du document (livre 1), en examine les enjeux et les difficultés, s’interroge sur le lien avec le nom de Pison, avec les circonstances troubles de son affectation, avec la méthode de l’historien Tacite. Le livre 2 élargit et étoffe la recherche aux cinq siècles durant lesquels les Pisons attestent des fortunes individuelles diverses au sein de leurs lignées. Une micro-histoire politique, sociale, personnelle non limitée à la prosopographie offre une lecture susceptible d’enrichir le regard sur ces siècles d’histoire longue. Les interrogations des Romains, au fur et à mesure du temps, sur le devenir de leur empire et les réactions qu’il faisait naître prennent une dimension nouvelle. Le régime monarchique, objet de critiques et de détestations variées, masquait les réalités vécues. La noblesse romaine n’obéissait pas alors aux catégories des noblesses des époques européennes postérieures dont les titres, expression d’une parcelle de pouvoir plus ou moins étendue, structuraient plus que le nom la postérité et la longévité. Pouvoir ou popularité, quelle était la question accrochée au nom des Pisons, à leur mémoire?
