About the Book

Injustement oublié de la critique, le comte de Caylus (1692-1765) est l’un de ces curieux qui font tout l’attrait du XVIIIe siècle. Graveur industrieux et doué, amateur honoraire de l’Académie de Peinture, inspirateur des artistes, archéologue et critique d’art avant la lettre ; membre de l’Académie des Inscriptions, médiéviste et théoricien du conte ; inspirateur de la célèbre société du Bout du Banc, où il composa avec ses convives l’Histoire de Guillaume, Les Etrennes de la Saint-Jean, Les Ecosseuses et toutes ces autres histoires populaires et joyeuses, réunis après sa mort dans les Œuvres badines ; Caylus fut, à proprement dire, un « gentilhomme universel » et une célébrité vers le milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Le silence de la critique devant cet original a de quoi nous étonner. Ce volume, qui réunit une quinzaine d’études, un inédit et une bibliographie exhaustive de Caylus, vise à interroger cet oubli, et à mettre au jour l’homme et son œuvre d’amateur et de conteur.
