L'étude présente a pour toile de fond deux motifs: d'une part, le besoin de poursuivre d'une certaine manière le travail de pionnier qui fut accompli par Frits Noske dans son étude intitulée La méélodie française de Berlioz à Duparc (Amsterdam, 1954); d'autre part, l'irritation causée par la négligence à laquelle est exposée la musique française dans la vie musicale d'aujourd'hui. Vu l'immense étendue représentée par la littérature vocale après la mort de Duparc, l'auteur a dû faire un choix — très personnel, certes — se limitant à vingt compositeurs, dont le plus jeune est né en 1899 (année de la mort de Chausson). Il a voulu surtout attirer l'attention sur l'oeuvre de compositeurs qui, à son avis, n'entrent pas assez en ligne de compte dans la pratique musicale actuelle. L'auteur s'est également penché dans son étude sur la grande influence exercée par Wagner dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle, et il a étudié dans quelle mesure les compositeurs français se sont arrachés à son influence. Comme les compositeurs français font surtout usage, pour la composition de leurs mélodies, de la poésie de leurs contemporains, l'auteur a parlé aussi de l'évolution de la poésie au cours de la période qui suit le Symbolisme. Ont retenu également son attention le traitement du texte, c'est-à-dire la relation texte-musique, et la notion d'engagement, c'est-à-dire dans quelle mesure certains compositeurs se sont sentis impliquées dans les évènements politiques et sociaux.
