About the Book

This book is based on the very popular international publication (Crezee, 2013) and has been supplemented with Spanish glossaries. Just like the 2013 textbook, this practical resource will allow interpreters and translators to quickly read up on healthcare settings, familiarizing themselves with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and frequently encountered conditions, diagnostic tests and treatment options. It is an exceptionally useful and easily accessible handbook, in particular for interpreters, translators, educators and other practitioners working between Spanish and English. A special chapter on the US insurance system adds even more value for those in the US. The extensive English-Spanish glossaries will be very useful to Spanish speaking practitioners, and may also be beneficial to those working with other Romance languages, as the Spanish terms may serve as a trigger to help identify cognates. Where terms are most commonly used in a particular part of the Spanish speaking world, an abbreviation has been added to indicate which country it may be found in. This helps ensure that terms reflect usage in different parts of the Americas, and also in Spain.

Review :
This introduction into healthcare interpreting is one not to be missed for those entering the profession. While it would be quite difficult to discuss all specializations and settings a healthcare interpreter might encounter, the authors did a thorough job of covering the most common situations an interpreter might face, as well as general discussions of issues that interpreters face on a daily basis. Translators are also very well served by this book, as it can provide a deeper sense of a patient’s condition or situations in which he or she might need specific forms or information translated for various procedures and tests. The index is thorough, allowing the reader to look up specific topics quickly to get a broad sense of certain areas of medicine. Even the most experienced translators and interpreters will likely find this resource valuable. The authors have succeeded in providing a very valuable guide that covers what interpreters and translators need to know. I certainly recommend this book, especially to those who teach/work with the English-Spanish language combination. It is written in excellent standard English and the content is really substantial: introducing interpreting and the interpreting job, hospital settings of Western countries, and most of all, in-depth explanation of major diseases. [...] I would be pleased to recommend your publication to other countries training their first medical interpreters.
