About the Book

An analysis of the means by which quoted speech is framed in the Old Testament, with special attention to the distinctive marking of God's voice and variations in word choice and syntax as a function of literary and linguistic diversity. The discussion covers the distinct conventions of poetry and prose, verbs whose distribution is not uniform, and the significance of the common discourse markers 'mr, dbr and l'mr. A treatment of direct discourse marking in prophetic literature underscores that one cannot treat this corpus as a uniform construct, and that phrases such as "Thus saith the Lord" are unhelpful for insight into the self-perception of the classical prophets.

About the Author :
Samuel A. Meier, Ph.D. Harvard (1987) is Assistant Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Semitics, Ohio State University. His publications include The Messenger in the Ancient Semitic World (1988).

Review :
'The major strength of the book is its comprehensive analysis of the data relating to direct discourse in the Bible.' Cynthia L. Miller, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly, 1994. 'This is a very complete study...' Doug Nelson, Journal of Biblical Literature, 1994. 'This is a work of meticulous scholarship, providing a great deal of information on its topic and on matters associated with it....This book will be of value to many more than those concerned only with the Hebrew language.' E.J. Revell, Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1994. 'It is a distinctive contribution to Classical Hebrew syntax and will form the starting point fur future discussion on the subject.' Richard S. Hess, BSOAS, 1994. '...a painstaking and valuable study, a work which no Old Testament commentator or translator can afford to ignore.' Alan Millard, Journal of Theological Studies, 1995. '...a rich and detailed investigation...The work of Meier is admirable for the meticulous attention it gives to text and data. With its many lists and tallies of specific formations of Hebrew direct discourse phraseology it will continue to serve as a reliable compendium of direct discourse marking in Hebrew. Its 25 page scripture will make it useful as an exegetical aid.' Barry L. Bandstra,Biblica, 1995.
