Il Libro dei sogni di Daniele e un testo di notevole interesse per la storia della cultura medievale: una chiave dei sogni, un prontuario per l'interpretazione delle visioni oniriche, che si presenta come un elenco alfabetico di immagini e del relativo significato simbolico. Di probabile origine orientale, esso compare nella forma in latino in Occidente prima del IX secolo e, col titolo pressoche costante di Somnialia Danielis conosce un'enorme diffusione: presto viene tradotto anche nelle lingue volgari italiana, francese, inglese e persino in versi e la sua circolazione e amplificata da numerose edizioni a stampa che si protraggono fino all'eta moderna. Eppure, benche nella storiografia internazionale sia ricorrente la menzione di questo testo dal contenuto curioso, mancava ancora una considerazione d'insieme delle acquisizioni riguardo al Libro dei sogni di Daniele e solo alcuni dei numerosi manoscritti che ce lo tramandano hanno ricevuto in tempi recenti una edizione anche solo parziale, mentre ve ne sono molti altri ancora da identificare nelle diverse biblioteche europee. Sulla base del rinvenimento di un testimone inedito, nella prima parte del saggio si tracciano le linee essenziali della storia del Libro dei sogni di Daniele. Quindi si approfondisce l'interesse storico-giuridico che questo testo presenta e si analizza la disciplina giuridica della divinazione attraverso i sogni nel medioevo: il Libro dei sogni di Daniele, difatti, viene menzionato come testo "superstizioso" da Liutprando di Cremona e da Giovanni da Salisbury, ed e esplicitamente condannato da Graziano nel suo Decretum, uno dei testi fondamentali del diritto medievale europeo. Il saggio e completato dall'edizione di testimoni manoscritti inediti e da tavole sinottiche in forma semplificata che, mettendo a confronto diversi testimoni, rappresentano uno strumento utile anche ad altri studi nelle varie discipline medievistiche.
