About the Book

Chaplin discloses a life of hectic roller coaster rides and 'black dog' terrors that have formed the painful experiences of her life for more than 20 years. As a diagnosed manic depressive with a fulfilling and exciting life, Jacqui strongly believes that the more people who are willing to talk openly about their lived experiences with mental illness the better. This book takes an inside look at living with mental illness and how taking care of mind health and well being need not preclude living a wonderful, productive and fulfilling life. This candid autobiography serves to support those living with mental illness in two ways. Firstly to know they are not alone. Secondly, that there is hope and a way out of the black hole of despair that can accompany mental illness.

About the Author :
Chaplin discloses a life of hectic roller coaster rides and 'black dog' terrors that have formed the painful experiences of her life for more than 20 years. As a successful corporate coach and radio manager leading a fulfilling and exciting life and who also happens to be diagnosed manic depressive, Jacqui strongly believes that the more people willing to talk openly about their experiences the better. Disclosure takes an inside look at living with mental illness and how taking care of mind-health and wellbeing need not preclude having a wonderful happy and productive life. This candid autobiography serves two purposes: offering support for those living with mental illness in showing them they are not alone and that through mind health care, there is hope. An easy-to-read and informative companion guide offering mind health resilience strategies forms the second half of this book.

Review :
Stories expand our view of the world. 'Disclosure' by Jacqui Chaplin does all that and more as we are taken on her personal journey of living with bipolar disorder. We are given a glimpse of the alternate reality experienced by this courageous woman who has a lived experienced of this condition. Her journey reveals how her life experiences have differed from the general population as well as enhancing our shared humanity. The extreme highs and lows that characterize bipolar disorder have made life extremely challenging for Jacqui at times, and she shows tremendous insight as she describes periods of severe depression as well as manic phases. The experience of mania is a seductive phase that encourages people to avoid taking medication or to reign in their behaviour. As a result of these addictive highs, life can become very complicated. The extreme highs and lows affect judgement which often has the greatest destructive impact on personal relationships. At times these difficulties have threatened to overwhelm Jacqui's resources but she has sought help from professionals and friends, and developed personal strategies, such as her art and sharing her story with others, which have helped her through the toughest times. 'Disclosure' is divided into two sections. The first part recalls Jacqui's roller coaster life of living with bipolar disorder, while the second details insightful strategies for people living with bipolar disorder and for those who would like to be better informed about the condition. I particularly liked the series of thought provoking questions that she poses and the way she has divided them into different groups of individuals: becoming aware of having a diagnosable mental health disorder, aware, carers and interested others. Her practical suggestions sourced from what works in her own experience provide useful tips for sufferers and support people alike. If you want to learn more about living with bipolar disorder or have an interest in supporting those who do, then this is the book to read.--Linda Elliott, Director Family Health, Hawkes Bay area, New Zealand.
