About the Book

Since World War II, there has been a major change in the conditions under which international economic transactions take place. Foremost among them are the much more important role of firms, especially multinational corporations, and the reduction of barriers to the international movement of goods and of proprietary technology. This study is designed to provide a basic analysis of the modern conditions. It emphasizes the multidimensionality of modern international economic relations involving direct investment and the much greater importance of goods, which rely heavily on proprietary technology. These new conditions contrast starkly with the traditional, unidimensional focus on international trade and a need for a fresh approach. The emphasis of this study is on reality rather than on abstract elegance.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 The paradigm without government: introduction and scope; Schumpeter goods - the positive role of firms; interaction of the three genera of goods; dynamic aspects of the international involvement; are services different from goods?; intra-firm trade; the role of multinational corporations in international resource allocations. Part 2 The persuasiveness of government policies: the hierarchy of international economic policy; effect of mobility on government policy. Part 3 Additional dimensions of the paradigm: nationhood costs in a globalized world; identifying potential macroeconomic considerations; the paradigm in the light of major empirical studies; the paradigm in summary form.

About the Author :
The author is Professor Emeritus of International Economics and Finance at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Review :
"...a provocative and stimulating reflection on some aspects of the recent international economy that have been neglected by mainstream international economic theory...provides good insight into important real world phenomena." Journal of Economic Literature "Anyone who reads Professor Gray's book will no doubt be impressed by the complexity of his world where countries and corporations are increasingly involved and intertwined together. Added to this the rapidly changing technology, the author's demand for new theories to tackle the problem is understandable...what we need is not really a new paradigm. To the contrary the old economics paradigm remains very powerful as a tool to analyze this international networked world." Asia Pacific Journal of Management "...informative, understandable, and realistic...worth reading and pondering". Robert G. Hawkins, Dean, Ivan Allen College, Georgia Institute of Technology. "...a new broad paradigm to replace the standard international trade model..." Educational Book Review
