Esta es una de las mas bizarras comedias de enredo escritas en el Siglo de Oro. La trama esta enmarcada en un pasaje de la vida de Catalina de Erauso, donde la monja vasca que escapa vestida de hombre al Peru, se convierte en el alferez Guzman alli, y tiene un romance amoroso con dona Ana, a quien ama su amigo don Diego tambien. Guzman, en parte por esto ultimo, en parte por defender su honor, hiere y mata a varios hombres en duelos y reyertas, incluido su propio hermano -que la busca para restituirla forzozamente a Espana y a su sexo-. Condenada a muerte por sus hechos de sangre, los personajes toman distintos partidos ante la sentencia. La comedia gira en torno al tema del honor, pretendiendo el autor mediante su insolito tratamiento del trasvestismo y el homoerotismo, establecer una igualdad entre los sexos demostrada aqui tanto con la pluma como con la espada. La historia de la monja alferez es un texto de referencia en los estudios feministas y sobre la condicion historica de la mujer.

About the Author :
Juan Perez de Montalban (Madrid, 1602-1638). Espana Juan era hijo del librero real que edito el Buscon de Quevedo sin la anuencia de este. Sus antepasados eran judios conversos. Estudio teologia y se ordeno sacerdote a los dieciocho anos, deviniendo notario de la Inquisicion. A los diecinueve anos escribio su primera comedia. Fue el discipulo predilecto de Lope de Vega y adversario de Francisco de Quevedo, que lo ridiculizo varias veces en sus obras. Escribio unas cincuenta obras teatrales de diversos generos. A la muerte de Lope de Vega compuso la Fama postuma (1636), elogio y primera biografia de Lope. Murio sumido en la locura. Leandro Fernandez de Moratin (Madrid 1760-Paris 1828). Espana. Hijo del escritor Nicolas Fernandez de Moratin formado en su circulo literario. Tras la guerra de Independencia se exilo en Paris por sus ideas afrancesadas. Viajo mucho y adquirio una amplia cultura, ademas del dominio de varias lenguas que le permitio traducir algunas obras teatrales al castellano. Murio en Paris en 1828.
