" Basti" is a beautifully written fictional chronicle of Pakistan's tragic modern history and is regarded as Intizar Husain's foundational masterpiece. In Urdu, basti means settlement or common place, and the novel begins with a mythical vision of harmony among old and young, men and women, Muslims and Hindus. Then Zakir (" the one who remembers" ), the protagonist, awakens to the modern world in the midst of a demonstration. The crowds surge. Slogans are shouted. Citi burn. He thinks of the love he left behind... What brings people together, and what tears them apart-- sometim so violently? Basti is both a love story and a meditation on the eternal qutions, set against a conflict whose echo are still felt today.

About the Author :

Intizar Husain (1923-2016), a Pakistani novelist and essayist, was the most important writer of fiction in Urdu, a stateless language born of interactions between the vernacular languages of northern India, Persian, Arabic, and others. He was born in Dibai, India, and emigrated to Pakistan in 1947, the year of independence and partition of the Indian subcontinent from the then-declining British Empire. His work, relatively unknown in the West, consists of poetry, short stories, and novels, as well as numerous journalistic contributions. One year after his death, Armaenia published his masterpiece, Basti, in Spanish for the first time.
