About the Book

This large-format book is also the catalog of the Jeff Wall exhibition held at the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City. It includes some of his recent color photographs mounted in boxes of light, as well as great impressions in black and white. For the Canadian artist, his photographs are divided mainly into two categories: documentary, a representation of a specific place and space without manifest manipulation by the artist, and cinematographic, in which the event is recreated and restructured. This last category comprises from subtle movements of elements within a given situation to more elaborate approaches that lead to the construction of scenarios and other aspects of stage work. While Wall is dealing with two different working methods, he is keen to see how they are continually confused and overlapping throughout artistic practice. With abundant references to the outstanding natural environment and distinctive urban character of the city of Vancouver, where the artist lives and works, the group of photographs reproduced here focuses mainly on the work created in the last seven years. This selection offers a compelling look at the ways in which Wall continues to question and expand the way photography is defined and understood. Jeff Wall was awarded the 2002 Hasselblad Award and his work is one of the most recognized museums and collections.

About the Author :
Born, living, and working in Vancouver, British Columbia, Wall has been a key figure in the city's arts scene for years. Early in his career, hehelped define the so-called Vancouver School and he has published essays on the work of his close colleagues and fellow VancouveritesRodney Graham, Ken Lum and Ian Wallace. His tableaux very often take Vancouver's mixture of natural beauty, urban decay and postmodernand industrial featurelessness as their generic backdrop. In 2002, he was awarded the Hasselblad Award. In 2006, he was made a Fellow ofthe Royal Society of Canada. [2] Jeff Wall was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2007.[3] In April 2008, Wall wasawarded the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement, British Columbia's annual award for the visual arts.
