David Gauthier se convirtio, con su obra La moral por acuerdo 1986, en un punto de referencia del neocontractualismo liberal contemporaneo. Para este volumen, el autor canadiense ha seleccionado cuatro ensayos que acercan al lector su comprension del contractualismo y la deliberacion racional, y ha anadido un prefacio que explica la evolucion y perspectivas de su proyecto. La originalidad de David Gauthier se hace evidente en cada uno de los problemas de los que se ocupa: como teorico de la racionalidad se opone a la concepcion ortodoxa de la racionalidad economica, y lo hace argumentando desde las propias premisas de esta, en su propio terreno; como filosofo moral, intenta demostrar que el comportamiento moral es racional sin desapegarse de la vision instrumental de la racionalidad que Hume declaro impotente fuera del ambito de los calculos y las cuestiones de hecho; como filosofo politico, considera contractualmente justificada una sociedad civil liberal, cuyas instituciones principales se articulasen en torno a la participacion politica y el mercado. Gauthier representa, por tanto, una posicion peculiar, que anade a estos rasgos la audacia de emplear con un nivel de especializacion notable el mismo lenguaje tecnico del modelo economico de racionalidad cuya critica y reformulacion constituye el nucleo de su enfoque. David Gauthier es profesor de Filosofia en la Universidad de Pittsburgh. Pedro Frances Barcelona, 1967 es profesor de Teoria de la Eleccion Racional en la Universidad Complutense e investigador visitante en el Departamento de Filosofia de la Universidad de Pittsburgh. Es autor de la tesis doctoral El contrato moral y de diversos articulos sobre el pensamiento de DavidGauthier.
