About the Book

The Kampfs, a family of nouveau riche settled in a luxurious Parisian apartment, have everything money can buy, but they lack what they crave most: the recognition of French high society. Eager to win her admiration, the couple prepares a big ball that Mrs. Kampf forbids her daughter, Antoniette, to attend, to which the young teenager decides to take revenge. The Dance is a masterful work in which Némirovsky makes an exquisite portrait of the difficult relationship of a mother and her daughter, of social ambition, hypocrisy and the arduous road to adulthood. A small jewel of universal literature.

After graduating from the Sorbonne, Irène began her literary career. "The Dance" (1930), which contains many autobiographical elements, was her greatest success in life. Deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, Irène died of typhus and her husband died of gassing. It would still be fifty years before her daughters discovered "Suite française", perhaps her most representative and shocking work.
