About the Book

Through articles, correspondence, manifestos, and fragments from his autobiography, Stefan Zweig clearly and forcefully demonstrates his position as a Jew and his own way of understanding Judaism in this collection, augmented by descriptions and analyses from Jean-Jacques Lafaye. The book delves into one of the most decisive aspects of the prolific writer s thoughts and life, and Zweig s writings show his passion for human beings and his argument that to be Jewish is nothing more than a form of humanism and a universal way of being a spiritual and cultural claim rather than a reductive hypothesis. From Zweig s views on Palestine, the Diaspora, and Europe during the dawn of Nazism, readers discover a perceptive, critical man and a lyrical conscience in this literary and moral testimony.
