Esta novela negra desmenuza la vida de dos familias de la posguerra española del 36, las cuales tenían objetivos opuestos. Mientras los Pardo pretendían torear al mundo para llenarse los bolsillos, los Diamantes intentaban llevar algo a la barriga para mitigar su hambre. En los cerros de Mourrán y de Muradella se había construido una amplia red de túneles para extraer estaño y wolframio de sus minas, pero estas un día fueron cerradas. Posteriormente, los túneles fueron utilizados como refugio por los perseguidos de la guerra civil, hasta que alguien muy descerebrado construyó un balneario de lujo por encima de los túneles y, trágicamente, una telaraña de barbaridades en el interior de los mismos. Esos túneles eran la reserva y el hogar de una amplia colonia de víboras hocicudas, de lobos pardos y de ratas negras, quiénes actúaban con más sentido de la solidaridad y de la justicia que muchos humanos supuestamente razonables y sensatos. Entretanto, una estelar proteína, casualmente descubierta por un miembro de la familia Diamantes, podría haber hecho mucho bien a la humanidad; eso sería si la avaricia de muchos humanos no estuviera ordenada y dirigida por tanta ruindad y crueldad. Los gemelos, Celso y Damián Pardo, presidente y vicepresidente del balneario nominado Mourrán Spa representaban las miserias de los Pardo. Sus cerebros estaban llenos de veneno y de microbios, eran... impredecibles. Sin embargo, el alma de la directora general del mismo balneario, Nora Diamantes, estaba sana, limpia, sin la criminalidad de los Pardo, pero era humanamente egoísta, ese fue su error y su pecado. En las instalaciones de Mourrán Spa aparecían dos niveles muy diferentes. Por los sobreterráneos, es decir, por las zonas iluminadas, la nieta de los Diamantes dirigía un balneario de lujo lleno de vida, de calma y de bienestar, con unos paisajes que fascinaban los sentidos y, sobre todo, que medio vaciaban las carteras de los adinerados clientes. Por los subterráneos de tal balneario, o sea, por las zonas obscuras, alguien construyó una organización maquiavélica, cuya facturación inicial era de doce mil millones de euros al mes. Ahora bien, con esa facturación resultaba inaudito que, de un lado, los gastos tecnológicos de esa organización eran tan primarios y únicos como unos alicates y una maquinucha destiladora y, de otro, que el comportamiento del Equipo de Ejecutores era tan desalmado que la barbarie practicada ocasionaba la mayor crueldad sufrida por los humanos. En esta novela se pretende airear una pizca de la maldad de algunas personas y del egoísmo enfermo de ciertos humanos, mejor dicho, de ciertos inhumanos. Ya lo decían las víboras hocicudas: Estos humanos olvidan antes a un hijo, a su propio hijo, que a un tesoro. Al final, el dilema histórico persiste y se repite: demos al Cesar lo que es del Cesar y a Dios lo que es de Dios. Llevado este aserto filosófico a los túneles de Mourrán, la moraleja debería ser esta: reconozcamos a los animales lo que pertenece a los animales, y, respetemos a los humanos los derechos de los humanos.
