About the Book

This is a collection of articles based on the master's theses of alumni from the Department of British and American Studies at the University of Oslo. The book aims to stimulate interest in the field amongst current and future students of American civilization. The concept of civilization studies has expanded from what once consisted of the study of modern languages to what now constitutes a broadly-based study of cultures. This evolution has come about through the realization that languages cannot be studied separately from their social and cultural framework. The three parts of the anthology are entitled "The Pioneers", "Bearing The Torch" and "The Guardians of The Republic". Part I, subtitled "Dreams and Realities on the Far Frontier", deals with an important formative phase of the American tradition and includes a description of the history of the "golden state" of the union - California in the 1940s; a multi-ethnic study of the relations between Western emigrants and the Native Americans; and an analysis of the mythic hero, the "Mountain Man", approaching the interplay between myth and reality. Part II, subtitled "Visions and Rights in Modern America", addresses central social and political aspects of American life in the revolutionary years of the 1960s and includes a depiction of the reluctant acceptance of the white mainstream for the blacks' struggle for liberation, as depicted in "Reader's Digest" from 1942 to 1969; a description of the relations between the American administration and the civil rights activists in the early phase of the Kennedy regime; and an analysis of the press response to the Reagan administration. Part III, subtitled "The Supreme Court and the Living Constitution", deals with the US Supreme Court's handling of central issues in contemporary American society and includes articles on abortion, the death penalty debate and the Fourth Amendment, which advocates granting police wider discretionary powers in their battle against crime.
